Is That Your Grandma's Blazer?

In my previous post, "Selling to your Salesman.", the first point was the importance of presenting yourself. Although I wouldn't call myself a fashion guru, I do believe that dressing well is an important aspect to address for a young professional.

I am sick of seeing friends walk out of interviews dressed like an 80 year old librarian. (Okay, that might be a little mean but come on!) You can imagine it: black slacks, white button up, black flats, and a folder.

On word comes to mind: Boring.

Is that how you really want to represent yourself?

I'm not telling everyone to dress like Elle Woods with pink and glitter outfits (although it would catch my attention). But, it would be nice to show your personality. Just like how you spend hours making your resume pop and stand out, you need to stand out during your interview! I have put together a short list of every female's business essentials. These items are ridiculously versatile and can help you not only stand out but be remembered.

1. The Blazer

Instead of the traditional black, try mixing in a gray or navy blazer. If you're ever in a hurry, a blazer over a t-shirt and jeans instantly makes you look more credible. Even with an all black ensemble, the navy or gray will bring just enough personality to make you stand out. If you're bold, go for the colored blazers too! I personally love white and peach.

2. Short Heels

Save your stilettos for the club. Invest in a pair or two. Nude or black heels work best. Heels are so much more fun and powerful than flats. Think back to all those times when you heard heels clicking down the hall and you knew it was your principal. The height will depend on how comfortable you are walking in heels. I recommend 2 inches. Regardless, make sure that your heels are comfortable.

3. Solid Tanks

These are such life savers. With a modest neckline, these look amazing under a blazer. If you are a black on black girl, try throwing in a little color with your tank. It's subtle, but enough to add a pop of color.

4. Really, Really Dark Denim

I know the word "Denim" and "Work" don't generally mix unless you work at Levi's, but trust me on this one. I have a pair of dark jeans that are so dark that you wouldn't be able to tell they were jeans. Not only do they look good, but they go great with almost anything. I personally love the cut on skinny jeans with heels, but that is up to you. (Sometimes a pair of thick leggings does the trick too. Just make sure that your shirt is long enough.)

4. A Colorfully Fun Bag

If I haven't convinced you that color adds personality by now, that's okay. You can dress black on black and then add a nice white clutch or laptop bag to complete your outfit. Some days when I'm feeling gloomy, I like to add a little color to my outfit by carrying a red or blue bag. Your resumes are special so why put them in a boring folder?

These items are not only great for work and interviews, they are perfect for a company picnic or even a night out.

Working corporate doesn't mean you can't dress fun and illustrate your personality. I'm all about looking professional, but especially when you work in sales or marketing, it is important to match your outfit to your professional enthusiasm.

PS. Please, no pinstripes. Thanks.
