2016: Where Everyone Wants to be in a "Garage" App

Flashback to 2006, every kid wanted to learn the guitar so that they could be the next Jimmy Hendrix or Carlos Santana. It was the era in which if you weren't in a garage band, you wanted to be in one or knew someone. Growing up in LA, my friends and I would make my parents empty my garage so that I could write songs and practice Sunday afternoons for the next "show". But now in 2016, Teens are no longer trying to nab a spot on the local Warped Tour, but instead trying to make it to the next Hack-a-thon.

How did an industry that used to be regarded "nerdy" become the new "cool"?

With programs like Udemy and CodeAcademy, learning to code is more accessible than a local Pokestop (Sorry, I had to). Now, with Apple's Swift Playgrounds children can learn the basics of coding and become the next (insert coder here).

"Oh, you don't know Ruby on Rails?"

It seems like in this day and age, if you can't do basic coding, you are now the kid who brings brussels sprouts for lunch. I guess it's time for me to learn.

What do you all think?

Should everyone learn to code to keep up or should it be kept to the "real" enthusiasts?
