Streaming Wars: The Cable Menace
I'm sure by now you've heard that good ol' Disney is looking to say goodbye to Netflix after 2019. With companies like Disney looking to move to their own streaming service and companies like Netflix looking to create more original content, there is no doubt that video streaming is taking over the world.
"Cord cutting" used to be a term used to describe millennials who would rather pay the $10/month for a streaming service than pay for live TV but now it seems like the age of cable boxes, Tivos, and DVRs are coming to a grim end.
I recall the days in which I had to use a VHS tape to record the Thanksgiving parade so I could sleep in, and then it was crazy when you could record it on your DVR. Now, all you have to do is log onto an app on my phone or smart TV and I can watch it at my convenience.
The world is constantly changing and companies such as Netflix and Amazon are now having to compete with many content creators and broadcasters in subscriptions. Disney is not the first to have decided to produce their own streaming service and definitely not the last.
What I find will be interesting as a CDN/OVP specialist recruiter heavily involved in this market is whether or not these new streaming players will use the standard streaming giants of Akamai, Brightcove, etc or try to outsource and then build their own internal streaming team.
